Since the early 1800s, Indiana limestone has become the building block of architecture along with granite and marble. It is more durable and resistant to weather erosion than common limestone. Indiana limestone has been used in buildings such as the Biltmore Estate (1895) in North Carolina, the National Cathedral (1907) and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., the empire State Building in New York City, and many college campuses, including Indiana University in Bloomington.
