My friend Christine wanted to learn how to sew with a sewing machine so she could make curtains for her home. She asked me if I would be interested in taking sewing lessons.
I thought WOW! That would really challenge my male comfort zone. And besides, being a "tool guy", it would give me an excuse to buy a sewing machine at Walmart.
We searched the internet and could not find any sewing classes locally. Zumba and Pole dancing lessons are more popular these days with women! I needed to find a sewing instructor so I could learn how to use my sewing machine.
So, I walked into a senior center for retirees and asked "who here can teach me to sew?" The front desk person took me down the hall to a room filled with ladies playing card games and introduced me to white haired, Esther. I bowed, smiled and introduced myself to the other ladies at her game table. I pitched my plea to Esther. She asked if I knew how to play Canasta. I said I used to play it with grandma. She smiled and motioned me to take a chair at their table. I joined them in a hand of Canasta.
The next day she introduced me to a women, Kathy Matura, that teaches classes for the Adult Learning Center in Titusville, and the American Sewing Guild.
Lord, thank you for that dash of charm and inhibition you put in me. Sometimes the girls run the other way. Today they invited me to their table.
I took six 3 hour evening classes at a total cost of $30. I learned how to use the machine to hem pants and make wine gift bags.
