The rise of the "Pharaohs" (Magicicada septendecim) occurs every seventeen years in parts eastern North America. In May, the nymphs dig their way to the surface of the soils after having spent seventeen years underground. They then climb the trunks of deciduous shrubs and trees to molt their shrimp skins and spread their wings. The unison of their mating songs fill the neighborhoods and countryside. After mating the females lay their eggs in the bark of twigs and die. The eggs will hatch in July and fall to the ground where they will burrow 1-3 meters below the soil to begin the seventeen year cycle of life.
