Iron Snort, Union Pacific 844
Union Pacific 844, one of ten FEF-3 class 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotives. Re-numbered 8444 for the period 1961-1989. Built in 1944 by ALCO. The last of ten steam locomotives in service for the Union Pacific Rail Road till 1959. The 844 could maintain speeds of 120 MPH pulling passenger trains. I captured this image in 1972, as the 8444 pulled into Greeley, Colorado en route from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Denver, Colorado. This photo won 1st place in the black and white print division of the 1973 Industrial Arts Fair at Colorado State University. Titled "Iron Snort" by my friend and mentor, Paul Maloney, of the Greeley Tribune Newspaper.
